Furlough day for DeKalb workers
WABE's Charles Edwards reports
DeKalb County Commission budget chair Connie Stokes says the county is losing revenue every month.
STOKES: "Our collections have not been where we anticipated they will be and we feel going into next year, it's going to be the same at least for the first part of the year."
That's why DeKalb employees got a note with their most recent paycheck explaining they'll still be off the day after Thanksgiving they just won't get paid. DeKalb Commissioner Lee May estimates the furlough will save the county at least a million dollars and that this cost saving measure won't be the last before they pass the 2010 budget in March.
MAY: "Decisions that we're going to have to make forward are going to be difficult just like this decision to furlough one holiday and just to let people know that both the board of commissioners and the CEO are working in concert to address some of these issues."
It's unclear how much money DeKalb will have to cut. Early estimates are at least 20 million dollars.
