Law Bans Animal Gas Chambers
(2010-12-27)
(WABE) - A new state law that goes into effect on Friday will outlaw the use of animal gas chambers for dogs and cats.

Most animal shelters in the state use lethal injection to euthanize animals. However, the law targets about ten county animal control shelters that had been using carbon monoxide gas chambers to put dogs and cats to sleep. Several animal rights organizations are pleased to see the practice end. Georgia Humane Society president Michelle Humphries says gassing animals is cruel.

"They put several animals at time in the gas chamber, and they turn it on and they can hear the gas going into it, so it's very frightening to them."

Humphries says lethal injection is more humane.

"When you are doing lethal injection you are doing one animal at a time."

Animal rights activists also say banning the gas chambers will be safer for animal control workers because long term carbon monoxide exposure is dangerous.
