Georgia Couples Seek Class Action Lawsuit Against BP
(2010-07-15)
(WABE) - Is the BP oil spill responsible for declines in Gulf Coast property value and economic opportunities for the region's property owners? A lawsuit filed this week on behalf of two Georgia couples says yes. The federal lawsuit seeks class action status.

The couples have different situations but argue their plight is directly related to BP. One couple says the land it owns on the Gulf Coast is worth less thanks to the oil spill. The other couple claims the spill has kept them from rent out their condo in the region. Both couples are represented by the Atlanta-based lawfirm Taylor English.

"The suit seeks to obtain status as a class action representing all Georgia residents who own property affected by the oil spill in the Gulf," said Foy Devine, Taylor English's litigation head.

Devine says there's not a required number of plaintiffs for a class action lawsuit. However, plaintiffs must live in Georgia and own Gulf Coast property. Devine estimates Georgians own 10 percent of all Gulf Coast properties.
