Beltline's Art Vandalized
(2010-07-08)
(WABE) - Vandalism was something that Beltline officials had planned for, and they even worked this into the projects initial budget. Now, after only one month, half a dozen of the 40 art installations have been either defaced or partially destroyed. The most widely reported instance of this vandalism has been a gay themed piece entitled "Locked Out" consisting of a series of doors which have repeatedly been kicked in. However Beltline officials are quick to point out that other pieces which did not share this theme have also been vandalized, so it is not clear if this is an isolated hate crime. The Beltline is hoping that by repairing these installations as quickly as possible, vandals will simply grow tired of defacing them. Ethan Davidson is director of communication for the Beltline
"I think the fact that people see quick action, it definitely sends the message that we are on top of it and that we want the art to be there. And to be there in the form that it was meant to be"
The "Locked Out" installation of doors is expected to be repaired by the end of the week.
