Published in the Annals of Internal medicine the report by George Washington University focused on the role American medical schools play in producing doctors that will meet the needs of communities.

Candice Chen from George Washington University was co-author of the report which ranked 141 schools. Chen says the ranking were based on three things.
"How many of their graduates go into primary care fields, how many practice in underserved areas and how many of their graduates are under-represented minority physicians."
Atlanta's Morehouse School of Medicine ranked first for its overall social mission.
Dr. Harry Strothers is with the school's Department of Family Medicine. He wasn't surprised by the number one ranking.
"The mission of this school specifically is improving the health and well being of individual health and communities and increasing the diversity of both health professionals an scientists."
Morehouse School of Medicine was established in 1975 and this year had its largest graduating class with 57% of its doctors heading to primary care residencies.
