"Streets Alive" Turns Atlanta Roads Into Public Gathering Spots
Second District city councilman Kwanza Hall is one backer of the event. He says hundreds of thousands of people turn out for similar "Car Free Sundays" in places like San Francisco, New York, and even Bogota, Columbia. Hall hopes it catches on in Atlanta.
"I think this is again another way to be innovative," he said. "The mayor has signed on, and I think my colleagues are in support. We're all watching it to see how it works out. This is a test. I think we can all learn from it and use it to make our city a better place."
Streets Alive was to take place along a five-mile route, but the roughly $40,000 price tag to stage police at road closures was too much. It's been scaled back to about two miles and a cost of $15,000 to $20,000.
Streets are open to anyone who wants to join in from 1PM to 6PM Sunday. The event starts downtown at Woodruff Park and runs through the Old 4th Ward. For an interactive map of the event, click here.

The idea is simple: No Cars. Just people being active on the streets of their own community. That's the thinking behind Sunday's first-ever "Streets Alive."Second District city councilman Kwanza Hall is one backer of the event.
