MARTA Rolling Out New Buses
(2010-03-08)
(WABE) - MARTA is slowly rolling out some new buses, one-hundred and one to be exact.
WABE's Rose Scott reports, the new buses are environmentally friendly and feature other upgrades.

12 years or 500,000 miles whichever comes first...that's when MARTA's policy decides when it's time to replace a bus.
Dwight Ferrell is MARTA's deputy general manager and chief operating officer.
He says these buses will use compressed natural gas which is a clean fuel instead of diesel fuel.

Other improvements include wheelchair restraints which were redesigned to make the ride a little bit more comfortable for wheelchair passengers.

Overall the total price for the buses is just under 42-million dollars and that would have meant a huge portion of the transit's operating budget but Ferreral says that's were fed money came in handy. Some of the buses were paid for through federal grant money.

Not all of all the 38 passenger buses are out Ferrell says the last bus won't hit the streets til May.
