Slavery Apology Debate Could Return to the State Capitol
(2010-02-04)
Rep. Al Williams (D-Midway), sponsor of the slavery apology resolution Georgia General Assembly
(WABE) - The debate over whether Georgia should apologize for slavery is about to resume at the State Capitol. Democratic Representative Al Williams of Midway told WABE that next week, he and other lawmakers will launch a campaign to get a hearing for his resolution. Williams introduced it last year, but did not actively push for it until now. In House Resolution 295, the Legislature would acknowledge that the state's involvement in slavery was wrong and express what the resolution calls "profound regret" for Georgia's role in slavery. Williams tried to pass a similar resolution three years ago; but negotiations with the Senate broke down.
Williams told WABE's Denis O'Hayer now is the time for a slavery apology; because 2010 marks 150 years since the first Confederate state, South Carolina, seceded from the Union and also because other Southern states have apologized.
