New gay publication planned for Atlanta
(2009-12-08)
(WABE) - The former editor of Southern Voice, Atlanta's now-defunct gay and lesbian newspaper, is launching a new publication called Georgia Voice.

Laura Douglas-Brown has her work cut out for her. She wants to launch print and web publications under the name Georgia Voice early next year. So she's busy now contacting potential staffers and advertisers.

But Douglas-Brown says her top priority is making the new publication financially sustainable.

"That will mean certainly a smaller staff than Southern Voice and David magazine shared. It will mean using more freelancers, and it might even mean using volunteers. There are certainly people who have volunteered to help us on a pro-bono basis as we get started."

Douglas-Brown and the founder of Southern Voice, Chris Cash, are raising money to seed the new venture. While some publications have become Web-only, Douglas-Brown said a print version allows for higher-priced ads and provides a vehicle for more in-depth reporting.

"You want to be first and fast on the Web and sometimes that doesn't leave as much time to look at the big picture of a story, really get analysis and feedback, and that's what we see doing in the print publication."

Window Media, which owned Southern Voice and other publications, filed for bankruptcy last month.
