Study: Atlanta Dangerous for Pedestrians
(2009-11-10)
(WABE) - The group "Transportation for America" just listed Atlanta among the worst cities in the nation for pedestrians. WABE's Jim Burress has more.

Sally Flocks lives daily life with epilepsy. As such, she relies mostly on her two feet to get around.

"I walk about 5 1/2 miles a day just for transportation. It's how I buy groceries, it's how I get to transit, it's how I get to a movie theater."

As director of PEDS, a local pedestrian advocacy group, it didn't surprise her to learn metro Atlanta ranks as the 10th most dangerous city in the nation for pedestrians. Flocks says metro Atlanta's explosive growth is partly to blame:

"you have more pedestrians now living out in the suburban areas, on transit routes, in apartments, but on roads that aren't designed for pedestrians they're really designed for speeding."

Flocks agrees with the study's findings that governmental planning decisions are largely to blame for Atlanta's poor showing.

Atlanta came in 10th based on the number of pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 residents.
