Norwood Contradicts Self on next Police Chief
(2009-10-30)
(WABE) - Yesterday, the top mayoral candidates signed a pledge to demand greater accountability from the city's police. They also vowed to undertake a nationwide search for the next Atlanta police chief. But as WABE's Odette Yousef reports, that directly contradicts what the frontrunner has promised in the past.

Moki Macias heads the group that wrote the pledge, and praised the candidates for signing on.

MACIAS: And what we expect of them is one, to do a nationwide search for the next chief of police.

But Norwood has repeatedly vowed to find a police chief internally. Here she is at an endorsement announcement last month:

NORWOOD: It's really important for state representation and city representation that we get a police chief that understands from the get-go that there is an intersection at Victory Drive and Murphy Avenue.

Has Norwood changed her mind? Her campaign chief, Roman Levit, says no.

LEVIT: A nationwide search for the chief of police would begin internally within the Atlanta Police Department, looking for a leader. If no one is if the right person is not found internally, then, of course she would look nationwide.

Norwood's commitment to hiring internally has prompted concern amongst some civic leaders, who say she should hire the best the city can get.
