Demonstrators Show Skivvies in Protest of Gay Bar Raid
ATLANTA, GA
(WABE) -
Six weeks after Atlanta police raided a Midtown gay bar, a handfull of demonstrators Wednesday took to the streets to renew calls for police accountability. As WABE's Jim Burress reports, some wore nothing but their underwear.
Dressed in a T-shirt and boxer shorts on the corner of 10th & Piedmont, Laura Gentle says she's in her underwear to remind passers-by of what happened on September 10th at the Atlanta Eagle:
"The number one thing is they didn't find any sexual activity and they didn't find any drugs. People still seem to not know that they only arrested people on license and permit charges that had to do with underwear, essentially."
Atlanta police arrested eight bar employees on permit violations. But during the raid, police reports show officers detained upwards of 60 bar patrons. Some claim officers were heavy-handed and used derogatory language.
APD is investigating the allegations. Meanwhile, the eight employees are due in court November 3rd.
