(WABE) - There's just something about $3 a gallon gas that keeps folks' cars in their driveways.

In 2007 and 2008, an estimated 8,000 metro Atlanta drivers signed up for the Clean Air Campaign's commuter rewards program.

According to a study by the Center for Transportation and the Environment, almost three-quarters of commuters kept with the program 18-to 24-months later.

Kevin Green is the Executive Director of the Clean Air Campaign:

"Even when gas prices were on average $1/gallon cheaper than when people signed up for these programs, 74% of them had stuck with it."

Green says the Campaign has seen a major drop-off in new drivers joining its commute alternative programs. He says falling gas prices and higher unemployment are largely to blame.

Jim Burress, WABE News.

According to the topline info available in the Cash for Commuters survey, the primary reasons for maintaining or increasing use of an alternative mode were:

Saving money 61%
Convenience 30%
Enjoying alternative mode 30%
More environmentally aware 13%
