Citizens Press Atlanta City Council About Gay Bar Raid
(2009-09-16)
(WABE) - Tuesday afternoon, members of Atlanta's City Council heard the concerns of several in the city's gay community. Those upset about the police department's handling of a September 10th raid of a Midtown gay bar asked council members for answers. WABE's Jim Burress reports.

Patty Ellis is a Midtown resident. She told the Atlanta City Council Public Safety Committee Tuesday she's also the mother of a gay son.

"We're scared to walk down our streets at night because of crime. Come on now."

Ellis was one of about a dozen citizens who spoke to the committee. While she challenged the department's choice to raid the Atlanta Eagle, others voiced concern at the way the raid went down.

"Why can't they do it in a more civil manor? We're the city too busy to hate. Why can't they do it in a different way? "

"Who authorized this raid? Someone high up had to authorize this raid, and we deserve answers to this question."

APD Deputy Chief Carlos Banda told the committee police raided six other Atlanta bars and nightclubs in the past three months. He said none of those were predominately gay establishments.

Meanwhile, Banda said an investigation opened this week into the Atlanta Eagle raid could take six months to complete.
