Former Georgia Aquarium Head Remembered
(2009-06-29)
(WABE) - Jeff Swanagan was the Georgia Aquarium's first employee, working with founder Bernie Marcus when the project was little more than an idea.

Taking the position of president and executive director in 2002, Swanagan helped guide the aquarium's development from its inception.

Anthony Godfrey is the aquarium's current President and Chief Operating Officer. He says Swanagan treated everyone--from executives to volunteers--like family.

"It's a real loss to us. Certainly a lot of sadness here at the aquarium in his passing. But we're also very privileged and thankful we got to have a lot of years together too."

An Ohio native, Swanagan last year returned to his home state to head the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. It's the same place he started his career nearly 30 years ago.

Jeffrey Swanagan was 51.
