Clayton State Students to Give Free Tax Assistance
(2012-02-03)
(WABE) - Accounting students from Clayton State University are offering free income tax assistance for taxpayers who make under $49,000 per year.

It's part of a larger IRS initiative called the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, which is providing free tax counseling in more than 40 locations across metro Atlanta.

It's the 22nd straight year Clayton State business students are offering free tax counseling.

The students receive extensive training from the IRS in order to help taxpayers receive all the credits they qualify for.

Business Professor Judith Ogdon oversees the program. She says it's tremendously popular, particularly because taxpayers can file on-site.

"Most of the people that come to us are getting a refund," said Ogdon. "They want and need the money and so there's a real advantage to doing it sooner. We file electronically and we can do direct deposit, so they get the money back pretty quickly."

The most common mistake Ogdon has noticed through the years is which parent should be filing their kids as dependents. She says confusion by parents can hold up refunds for months.

The school is offering the free service each Saturday of February and the last three Saturdays of March.
