Mayoral Candidates Jump into Runoff
ATLANTA, GA
(WABE) -
Running on little to no sleep, Atlanta's two mayoral candidates jumped into the run-off race today with a sense of urgency. Mary Norwood spoke to leaders of the city's key hospitality industry, while Kasim Reed met with voters in several neighborhoods.
WABE's Odette Yousef reports.
Norwood indicated to reporters that the race will be as much about raising money as it will be about convincing Atlantans to vote again:
NORWOOD: I have been on the phone, raising money all morning, that's the key to any campaign, and we are mobilizing our base.
Norwood doesn't yet know how much she'll need to campaign through the next four weeks:
NORWOOD: We will be raising hundreds of thousands of dollars, and I had a goal today of well over 100, and we've made that goal already commitments, commitments to raise money.
A spokesperson for Reed's campaign says Reed received promises for well over twice that amount in the hours following the vote. Tharon Johnson is Reed's campaign manager:
JOHNSON: The finances are good. I think we have displayed throughout the campaign that we can raise a substantial amount of money to make sure that we can fund our operation and our strategy. So we feel very comfortable where we are right now financially.
Reed was expected at the Atlanta Hotel Council's mayoral forum as well, but Johnson said a scheduling conflict kept him away. The candidate spent the day meeting with voters in Midtown and Morningside, and strategizing with internal staff.
The run-off will be December first.
