Deck collapse rescue almost complete
(2009-07-02)
(WABE) - Today, rescue crews removed the last car damaged from this week's parking deck collapse in Midtown Atlanta.

In all, they've removed 45 damaged cars and confirmed no one was injured or killed.

When the 5th floor of the Centergy parking lot collapsed, it had a domino effect. Cars and concrete from the 5th floor fell on the 4th floor and so on until everything hit the ground level.

Since Monday, crews have been removing layer by layer. Crews have either towed, lifted or driven cars out of the deck.

Atlanta Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson Bobby Stewart says their job is about 90 percent done.

STEWART: "We have already searched the entire parking deck for our primary and secondary searches as well as, first and foremost, the collapsed side of the parking deck all of those cars and that area has been searched as well."

Now the focus shifts to removing cars that weren't damaged. Stewart says emergency officials have to drive those cars out one by one. Driving too many cars at once could affect the deck's stability.

Stewart estimates all cars will be out of the deck by Friday.
