Atlanta
Here Comes DragonCon, Sheraton Hotel Preparation
ATLANTA, GA
(WABE) -
Right now the arrivals for this year's Dragon Con are in downtown Atlanta.
City officials estimate nearly 35-thousand will attend the 3-day multi-media,
Sci-fi and gaming convention.
As WABE's Rose Scott reports, planning for the annual onslaught of super heroes and storm troopers is quite a task:
Preparing for Dragon Con is a major event it's like Darth Vader waiting for the arrival of the Emperor in Return of the Jedi.
MOVIE SCENE - Return Of The Jedi:
"the death star will be completed on schedule, you've done well Lord Vader, everything is proceeding as I have foreseen"
Okay maybe not that dramatic.
But Juliana High says with the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Atlanta says planning for this Dragon Con actually began after last year's convention.
HIGH:
"we are completely sold out, all hotels in downtown Atlanta sell out by December so in December of 2009 we were sold for Labor Day weekend"
High is the marketing manager for the Sheraton...with a wide smile she says
there's a lot more involved than getting 7-hundred 63 guests room ready:
HIGH:
"and that includes all of our vendors, av, it's housekeeping, it's the front desk, it's the bell carts and valet and preparing for 532 cars come thru and 12-hundred square feet of rope and stanchion for the registration"
This is the third year the Sheraton is a host hotel for Dragon Con.
Sal Perez is a veteran of the hotel industry and is currently the director of rooms.
He says making sure everything runs smooth is a dual effort and he credits Dragon Con organizers.
PEREZ:
"they keep a big group of volunteers to help with security and they really are a good partner to us so, that's been the one thing that's stood out from them with their growth they've managed to grow with it"
So, that means be on the lookout for hobbits, dragon slayers and of course these guys.
MOVIE SCENE - Return Of The Jedi:
"Luke, I am your father, no, no that's not true, join me and together we can rule the galaxy as father and son"
