Alex Cooley Talks About "Woodstock of the South" 40 Years Ago
(2009-07-01)
(WABE) - On the weekend of July 4-5, 1969, well over 200,000 music fans descended on the sun-drenched racetrack at Hampton, Georgia to attend what was billed as the first annual "Atlanta International Pop Festival." One month later, the rock festival near Woodstock, New York would attract world-wide attention. But, the Atlanta Pop Festival was the first-ever event of its kind for the South, and served to put Atlanta on the map as an important destination for big-name rock acts. Here, WABE's Steve Goss talks with long-time concert promoter Alex Cooley about his role in organizing the "Woodstock of the South." © Copyright 2012, WABE
