Privatizing Briscoe Field Without Commercial Service Unlikely
ATLANTA, GA
(WABE) -
Although some of those in favor of privatizing Briscoe Field have said the move doesn't necessarily mean commercial service will follow, it's now become virtually impossible to separate the two.
That's because only one company, Propeller Investments, submitted a proposal for privatizing Gwinnett's airport.
Propeller's Managing Director, Brett Smith, previously told WABE the only way Propeller would be interested is if it could eventually establish commercial airline service.
Gwinnett County has not made public the proposal, and Smith says he's not able to comment on the specifics.
But airport consultant Andrew Vacey says it's almost a given that privatization would have to mean commercialization.
"Based on the activity level there, it's not really viable as a privatization," says Vacey. "...which is why no one else probably responded under those terms."
Now it's left to the County to decide whether to move forward with Propeller's plan, or keep Briscoe a publically-owned airport.
No timeline has been announced for a decision.
