(WABE) - Last May, Southwest Airlines closed its purchase of AirTran Airways.

But for more than a year now, the Dallas-based low fare carrier has been planning its entry into Atlanta.

That happens Sunday.

In the final few days before its inagural Atlanta flights, workers are readying three gates in the North Terminal's "C"-concourse.

Eighty-six Southwest employees have transferred in recent weeks to Atlanta. Ground manager Brian Davis is one. He says they're ready for "opening day," although bookings have yet to sell out.

"I think it's typical with most station openings, you may be half full," says Davis. "It will pick up."

Southwest begins with 15 daily flights out of Atlanta.

That number will grow substantially as it integrates AirTran's operations over the next two years.
