Bill allows negotiations for GA polluters
(2012-02-02)
(WABE) - The bill's main sponsor Senator Rick Jeffares did not respond by deadline, but in the past he said the bill would help local governments.

For a sewage malfunction, cities and counties pay a penalty to the state which reduces the money to fix the problem.

Juliet Cohen with Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper wouldn't want the state to negotiate in crisis situations. The riverkeeper proposed an amendment for that.

"Draw the line for any voluntary compliance schedules or extensions in situations where there's an immediate threat to public health or drinking water supplies or fish and wildlife."

The Riverkeeper also wants a limit to number of extensions a polluter can be granted to fix a problem. The bill still needs approval from the Senate Rules Committee before it goes to the full Senate.
