Atlanta
Area Planned Parenthood and Komen affiliate pleased with Komen's change of course
But Komen Atlanta Executive Director Kelly Dolan says the organization disagreed with Komen's earlier policy. Instead of going public, Dolan says they internally voiced their concern.
"We felt that it was important to get to our national office, and to let them know that we were not happy with the policy. We felt again that it was too open-ended and nebulous, and that it needed to be revised.
The Komen statement says it will continue to fund exisiting grants to Planned Parenthood, and preserve the group's eligibility to apply for future grants. Leola Reis an Executive with Planned Parenthood SE says both groups are colleague organizations.
"We have a lot of overlapping supporters, and our affiliate here in Atlanta has walked in Komen walks before, and we have no plans to change our relationship with Komen."
But Suzanne Ward with Georgia Right to Life personally doesn't support Komen money going to Planned Parenthood. She stopped supporting the organization once she learned about the connection. Previously, Ward had supported Komen activities, because her mother died of breast cancer.
"But when I found out about their affiliation with Planned Parenthood, it completely changed my mind. I walked every year, my children and I, my husband. We walked every year."
Ward says there's been too much on her plate this week for her to decide whether or not to personally support the Komen Foundation.
