Atlanta opens "safe spots" for abuse victims
(2009-12-04)
(WABE) - Starting today, Atlanta's fire stations are also places where abuse victims can get protection and help.

Under the Safe S.P.O.T.S program, all city fire fighters have been trained to help victims of child prostitution, domestic violence and other crimes.

Stephanie Davis is Mayor Shirley Franklin's policy advisor on women's issues. Davis hopes abuse victims will first seek refuge at fire stations.

DAVIS: "Where there will be someone who is trained who can talk to them get the situation under control lock down the station and then refer that person for immediate help."

Estimates show about 3 thousand girls in Atlanta are victims of child prostitution every month.

There are 34 fire stations throughout the city.
