Chomp and Stomp kicks off tomorrow
(2009-11-06)
(WABE) - Cabbagetown's annual chili and bluegrass festival, Chomp and Stomp, is tomorrow.

There will be live country and bluegrass music, barrels of Sweetwater beer, and games like bobbing for brussell sprouts and speed cabbage-shredding.

But year in and year out, the attention grabber is the chili contest.

MARBURY: The competition has gotten really fierce with the chili. I know everyone's bringing their A-game. I start hearing about it a month or two out.

That's Katherine Marbury, Chomp and Stomp's organizer.

She says awards will be given in three chili divisions: individual, restaurant, and vegetarian.

MARBURY: We have everything from green chili to lamb chili to unholy freeholy chili is one of the winner's from years past. We have about 70 individual chili teams and 18 restaurants. Although it seems like a lot, it disappears with lighting speed.

For the first time, the award this year for best restaurant chili will be judged by a panel of celebrity chefs, including Shaun Doty, Kevin Gillespie, Linton Hopkins, and Kevin Rathbun.

Fox Brother's Barbeque, last year's winner for its brisket chili, is wondering how that'll affect the competition.

Here's Jonathan, one of the Fox Brothers.

FOX: I don't know if they're going to look for creativity. I think it's just up to their palettes on the day the wake up.

Chomp and Stomp kicks off at 10 a.m. and the chili-tasting commences at noon.

For WABE, I'm Jonathan Shapiro.
