Furloughs for colleges and universities
(2009-08-11)
(WABE) - This week, the Georgia Board of Regents will decide how many furlough days will impact the state's colleges and universities.

At least one of those schools is already taking some action.

At Georgia State University, faculty and staff are eager to know how many days without pay they'll have to take.

A letter today from GSU President Mark Becker didn't shed much light for them. But, he did ask the University's deans and vice presidents to join him in taking 14 furloughs days between now and the end of next June.

BECKER: "You know with the budget cuts and the accumulation of budget cuts are leading to sacrifices on the part of the universities and the people who work for, them and it's important that the leaders demonstrate that by stepping forward and taking their share."

As for faculty and staff, they might learn how many furlough days they'll have to take when the Regents concludes its 2 day meeting on Wednesday.

The Regents will also approve budget cuts for the other 34 Georgia schools in its system.
