Atlanta Schools to Avoid Teacher Furloughs
(2009-07-29)
(WABE) - The Atlanta Public School district does not plan to furlough teachers in the upcoming school year. The announcement comes one day after the state Board of Education voted to let districts furlough teachers for up to 10 days to deal with state cuts.

WABE's Odette Yousef reports.

Chuck Burbridge, Chief Financial Officer for APS, says the state cuts amount to 6 million dollars, which he hopes to make up elsewhere.

BURBRIDGE: There might be some non-teaching jobs that will come free that we'd be able to recoup some money in vacancies, we've been reviewing all our contracts and renegotiating contracts for various goods and services, and we've seen some evidence that we can get lower prices in the softer economy.

The State Board will let districts shave off of teachers' class preparation days, rather than instructional days.

Burbridge says the district expects another wallop when Fulton County completes its property tax digest. That's why APS won't take furloughs off the table completely.

Cobb County and DeKalb County schools in the metro Atlanta area have also said they will try to avoid the furloughs.
