Computer Model Can Predict How Swine Flu Would Spread Through Georgia
(2009-04-28)
(WABE) - There's a good chance if the swine flu comes to Georgia it will be via an airport or other high-traffic hub. That makes Atlanta a prime suspect.

Using a computer model Georgia Tech researchers developed, the state could then predict where and how quickly the virus might spread.

Julie Swann is a Georgia Tech professor who helped develop the model. She says it aids state officials in making policy decisions based on different scenarios.

"For instance if you were to close the school system in Georgia, what would that do to the spread of the disease? If you had voluntarily quarantines where people with someone sick in their household perhaps stayed home for some period of time."

The model was originally developed for the Red Cross to predict where treatments, food, and other resources might be most needed.
