Remaining merger issues face Delta
(2008-10-30)
(WABE) - Now that Delta and Northwest have all the approvals needed to merge, the focus turns towards blending each airline's work culture.

Most of Delta's workforce does not belong to a union while most Northwest workers do. So, what will happen as the two companies become one?

Delta President Ed Bastian says whatever the workers desire.

BASTIAN: "If the employees at the end of the day decide that they want to be represented by a union we will respect and honor that decision by them and we'll work together with them. If the employees decide they do not want to union and vote a union down we'll respect that decision."

While Bastian prefers the non-union approach, he says Delta's has a good relationship with its pilots union. Most experts say a merger is successful if it can get all employees from both companies one on accord. If they don't, they say customers can notice it in the service.

As for union pilots from both airlines, their arbitrated seniority list should be done by the end of the year.
