Georgia Energy Tax Credit an Uncertain Incentive
ATLANTA, GA
(WABE) -
The Georgia Clean Energy Property Tax Credit gives tax breaks for installing such things as geothermal heat pumps, solar powered equipment, and for businesses, even retrofitting light fixtures.
But the tax credits are capped at 35% of the total cost of the equipment. Plus, statewide, there's only $2.5 million available each year.
William Silva is with United Renewable Energy in Alpharetta a company that markets solar and wind products. He says Georgia's current cap on the tax credit leaves homeowners with a lot of uncertainty.
Silva: "If you're a homeowner and you're making a $40,000 investment in your home and you th ink 35 percent of that is going to be covered by a tax credit, you don't know until it's installed and once it's installed, a few big corporate interests could have taken all that credit.
Even so, Silva says the tax credits are a step in the right direction.
