Delta Northwest pilot negotiators reach tenative deal
(2008-06-25)
(WABE) - This week, leaders of Delta Air Lines' pilots union are getting their first glimpse at a plan designed to merge Delta's pilots with pilots from Northwest Airlines.

Delta's pilot union says the plan is the first step towards resolving seniority issues between Delta and Northwest pilots. The union won't reveal details until all pilots have voted. But, the key issue has been merging pilot seniority lists of the two airlines. Attorney Dan Kolber is a merger expert.

KOLBER: The process could be mediation. It could be flipping a coin. It could be any number of ways of mediating (basically) a dispute.

The issue of merging pilot unions is nothing new to former pilot turned consultant Kit Darby. He doubts the plan includes just one method.

DARBY: It's probably going to have a varied formula over the groups to try to compensate for the differences in the seniority lists.

Northwest has more senior pilots than Delta but Delta's pilots have better pay.

It's unclear when the pilots will vote on the plan.
