Delta pilots extend merger plan to Northwest pilots
(2008-04-22)
(WABE) - In a memo to Delta pilots, the head of the union defends his decision to broker a deal without Northwest prior to the merger announcement.

The union head also suggests a plan to bring both unions together.

Delta pilot union chair Lee Moak says the pilots tried to hammer out a deal but simply ran out of time.

However, Moak is optimistic both sides can come to an agreement. In a memo yesterday, he said he wants Delta and Northwest pilots to agree on a contract first and seniority afterwards through arbitration if necessary.

Former pilot turned consultant Bob Norris thinks it's a good idea.

NORRIS: So, by getting a common agreement on pay raises per equipment you've taken the big money issue off the table that ultimately was going to have to be resolved because obviously there's two different pay scales right now between the two units.

A spokesperson for Northwest's pilots says they're open to the offer. However, they still argue both groups could have done a better job themselves.

The latest agreement gives Delta pilots a 3 and a half percent pay raise and a seat on the merged airline's board.
