Morehouse College swears in new President
(2008-02-15)
(WABE) - Today, the nation's only historically black college for men swore in its 10th President.

As head of Atlanta's Morehouse College, Dr. Robert Franklin said during his inauguration speech this morning he will make financial aid a top priority.

Fewer than 3 thousand students go to Morehouse. Yet every year, money problems force as many as 150 students to drop out. During his Franklin calls it a tragedy.

FRANKLIN: They're smart enough to be here but often as little as 5,000 dollars separate them from their aspirations to become Morehouse men.

It costs almost 18 thousand dollars annually to attend Morehouse... and that's without room and board. Dr. Franklin would like to see alumni and corporate sponsors help students stay in school.

Other things on Dr. Franklin's agenda include improving of on-campus facilities, increasing the number of study abroad programs and attracting more historical documents from civil rights leaders. Morehouse is already home to the Martin Luther King collection.
