Car Washes Educate on Drought Measures
(2007-12-04)
(WABE) - Some car washes are on an educational mission to let drivers know they're drought-friendly.

Johnny Hickson manages the Two Minit Car Wash on Piedmont Road - the one with the gorilla in front. Last week he put up two huge banners saying that they use all recycled water.

HICKSON: I feel like if I put my sign up and they know that I'm recycling water and not wasting water, I have a better chance of those people coming to come in here and get their car washed.

Hickson says cleaning used water isn't hard:

HICKSON: This is my filter that re-cleans the water. You got charcoal, you've got gravels in it, you've got chemicals in it. It re-cleans the water sends it to this - what's the water coming out now. Like a huge filter. I don't know if they have filters now like they have in fish aquariums and stuff like that.

In another part of town, next to City Hall East, The Cactus Car Wash also has a sign touting its use of recycled water. Manager Jim James:

JAMES: The big question was, if they ask when we put the sign up, and they do ask. And then they're more comfortable with the fact that we recycle the water, versus using fresh water. Because some companies do use fresh water. And if it's really bad enough they'll be shut down, while we'll still be washing because we recycle our water.

In fact, both businesses have always used recycled water. It's just that now, it may be a plus to let customers know about it, too.
