Home Builders Association Opposes Gray Water Reuse Mandate
The mandate would require all new homes to store the water that was used in faucets and bath fixtures, so it could be used to water lawns.
The Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association fears that if Sandy Springs passes this, other regional governments will follow suit. And the association's vice president of government affairs, Chris Burke, says it won't help the current drought:
BURKE: You're not helping the drought conditions by drawing water from the reservoir, providing it to the house, but you're not returning anything back into the reservoir because you're catching all the wastewater from the house.
The association is opposed to further regulation, even though Burke admits that the industry isn't taking the lead:
BURKE: There's not a great deal that home builders can do to regulate water consumption.
Burke looks to state planners to solve water management and reservoir shortage issues in the long run.
