Nichols' Lawyers Ask for Further Delay
The case has been delayed four times. That's led to several recent criticisms of Judge Hilton Fuller's handling of the case.
First, Georgia's house speaker Glenn Richardson launched an investigation into whether Fuller should be impeached. Then, an e-mail from a retired judge to other Fulton County judges was leaked it called Fuller a debacle and an embarrassment. And last week, Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard filed a lawsuit with Georgia's Supreme Court, to remove Fuller and Nichols' lawyers from the case.
Today, one of Nichols' lawyers, Robert McGlasson, said those developments are grounds for further postponement:
MCGLASSON: If ever there were a time, your honor, when the public climate needs cooling off, it is now.
Lawyers for the state say that they are ready to begin the trial.
Nichols is accused of killing a Fulton County Courthouse judge, court reporter, sheriff's deputy, and a federal agent in March of 2005.
