Two New Whale Sharks Join Aquarium
ATLANTA, GA
(WABE) -
The Georgia Aquarium has some newbies. Two more whale sharks were brought in this morning from Taiwan.
The aquarium was closed for several hours this morning, to let its newest tenants acclimate to their new home. They are in the same large fish tank as the other three whale sharks.
Ray Davis is Senior Vice President of Zoological Operations at the Aquarium. He says that the arrival of the newcomers turned the big tank into something of a meat market this morning or fish market:
DAVIS: Whenever there's a new addition, everyone notices, and this is a new addition. So everyone is just kind of swimming around, checking each other out.
The two new whale sharks are young males, roughly 15 feet long. Davis says that aquarium officials aren't sure how old they are. That's something they're trying to figure out.
The animals' names pay homage to their homeland of Taiwan. One is named Taroko, after a scenic Taiwanese gorge. The other is named Yushan, which means Jade Mountain.
