Listen to today's Global Hit

October 7, 2004 ¿

In the Global Hit segment of the program, we usually feature new music that people are listening to around the world. Today and tomorrow, we're going to hear some old music.

This tune comes from a recent compilation entitled "Hot Women: Women Singers from the Torrid Regions of the World." All the songs on it reside in the record collection of one man. Robert Crumb is a cartoonist. He was the quintessential illustrator of the American counterculture in the 1960s. But he's connected to the culture of the rest of the world through another medium.

Crumb: All I know is the music, the old music. That's how I like to travel around the world, just listening to old records.

Robert Crumb lived in California for many years and rarely left home. About ten years ago, he moved to southern France. That's where the World's Marco Werman caught up with the man known as R. Crumb and with his vast music collection.

Tomorrow, R. Crumb tells how Columbia Records conquered Vietnam in the 1920s, long before Britney Spears invaded planet rock... as Marco Werman's chat with the record collector and illustrator continues.
