Water issue under debate in Legislature
(2007-04-10)
(NET Radio) - If something isn't done soon, Nebraska is at risk of being sued by Kansas for violating an agreement that spells out how the states should share the Republican River. The bill before state senators would fund efforts to increase the water flowing downstream - by buying or leasing water rights from farmers, removing water-thirsty plants, and other means. The plan tries to split the cost of doing that between state and local taxes and fees charged on the sale of corn and grain sorghum. During the first day of debate, Holdrege Senator Tom Carlson said he believes farmers in the area are stepping up and doing their part. © Copyright 2017, NET Radio
