Food stamp policy revised
(2007-03-13)
(NET Radio) - About 50,000 low-income families in the state collect food stamps. When a caseworker makes a mistake and overpays the family, it might not be caught until months later. At that point the family may have received hundreds or even thousands of dollars in overpayments. According to federal law the state can waive or reduce the demand for overpayments, in cases when paying the money back would cause the family undue hardship. But the non-profit group Nebraska Appleseed found that the state's Department of Health and Human Services wasn't informing families of that right. © Copyright 2017, NET Radio
