Higher contamination found in northern Ogallala Aquifer
(2007-02-09)
(NET Radio) - The study was conducted by the U-S Geological Survey to look at contamination in the High Plains or Ogallala Aquifer. The aquifer underlies parts of eight states, with Nebraska covering more of the aquifer than any of the others. Scientists compared ground-water samples under irrigated cropland in Nebraska and Texas. They found the highest levels of nitrate concentrations in some samples to be five times higher in Nebraska than in Texas. They also found about three-quarters of the Nebraska samples contained at least one pesticide, while in Texas only a quarter of the samples contained a pesticide. © Copyright 2017, NET Radio
