The state currently tests newborn children for six metabolic diseases. But some parents believe drawing blood from their infants is a religious violation. Josue Anaya of Omaha is a fundamentalist Christian and the father of nine children, none of which were screened after birth. He cited a passage from the Book of Leviticus that says the life of all flesh is in the blood. His wife, Mary, told the Legislature's Health and Human Services committee the tests infringed on their rights as Christians.null
