Lawmakers and Activists Call For Constitutional Amendment to Overturn Citizens United
(WAMC) - Last year, Vermont state Senator Ginny Lyons was lead sponsor of a resolution stating that money is not speech and calling on Congress to support a constitutional amendment clarifying that corporations are not people. She says the resolution is working is way thru the Statehouse and mirrors resolutions that will be on some Town Meeting Day ballots. Vermont Senate President Pro-Tem John Campbell says pushing for a constitutional amendment is a non-partisan issue that affects all Americans who want transparency in elections. A number of activists and election reform groups were represented. Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility Public Policy Manager Dan Barlow says they are supporting the resolution for a constitutional amendment because the Supreme Court ruling is bad for small business. An outspoken critic of the Citizens United Supreme Court decision is Ben and Jerry's co-founder Jerry Greenfield. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and Congressman Peter Welch have introduced resolutions to amend the U.S. Constitution to overturn Citizens United. An outdoor rally is planned Friday afternoon on the steps of the Statehouse as part of a national week of action targeting overturning Citizens United.
