TransCanada offers more safeguards for pipeine
(2011-10-18)
(NET Radio) - The company that wants to build an oil pipeline through the Sandhills is offering additional steps to address safety concerns.

TransCanada repeated its argument that it's too late to move the proposed route to avoid the Sandhills.

But the company says it's prepared to offer a performance bond of one hundred million dollars the state could use if the company failed to clean up a spill. It's also offering to build a concrete containment structure around a pumping station in Holt County, and to place extra material around the pipe in areas where the water table is high.

TransCanada's offering to test water wells for nearby landowners and provide alternative supplies in cases of contamination from a spill. And it's proposing to locate five spill response employees in O'Neill, along with equipment, and to add two more employees to the three that are already planned for Grand Island.

The proposals were contained in a letter to legislative Speaker Mike Flood, who met with TransCanada officials along with three other state senators last week. Flood had no immediate response to the letter.
