Gov. Quinn Meets With AFSCME Executive Director
Bayer says he requested the meeting to urge the governor to rescind the state employee layoffs he has threatened.
Bayer says he told Quinn the layoffs will harm vital state services and hurt the Illinois economy by putting thousands of men and women out of work.
Bayer says AFSCME believes the only way the state can start crawling out of the budget crisis is through comprehensive tax reform.
Governor Quinn wants AFSCME to reopen its contract to talk about doing away with pay raises this year and furlough days for state workers.
Bayer says the local union presidents will meet in early September to discuss that option.
