Getting Ready for Swine Flu
Since the swine flu, or H1N1 influenza virus, is so widespread, groups like the World Health Organization and the Department of Community Health are no longer reporting on just confirmed cases. Now they are reporting more generalized numbers, which include all influenza-like cases, including the seasonal flu.
James McCurtis is the Spokesperson for the Department of Community Health. He says counting all probable cases cuts out an unnecessary middle step.
"It's easier to keep tabs that way because we're seeing H1N1 more and more. Nothing to be alarmed about, but because we're seeing it more and more, we're grouping it in one category, and that's the general flu type category," says McCurtis.
McCurtis says the Department is urging parents to get their children vaccinated for seasonal flu before school starts this fall. Currently there is no vaccine for the H1N1 virus. © Copyright 2012, Michigan Radio
