OPEA opposes worker furloughs OKLAHOMA CITY (KOSU) - A state employee group is urging agencies to cut travel and other expenses before furloughing workers to deal with mounting state revenue problems.
Meanwhile, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission is moving ahead with a plan to let workers off one day a month.
The first scheduled furlough day is Aug. 10 at the Corporation Commission, which regulates utilities and oil and natural gas companies.
A spokesman for the Oklahoma Public Employees Association, Mark Beutler, said Wednesday agencies should reduce travel and make other cuts in lieu of furloughing workers.
State Treasurer Scott Meacham announced Tuesday that state revenues were down 30 percent in June from the same month in 2008 because of the recession and low energy prices.
Meacham sees more revenue problems ahead before the economy picks up.
