Update: First victim of swine flu died in Houston
(2009-04-29)
(ketr) - A 23-month-old toddler from Texas is the first to die as a result of the swine flu virus.

According to the Associated Press, officials say the death is a Mexican child who died in Houston.

A spokeswoman for the Houston Health and Human Services Department said that the child had traveled with family from Mexico to Brownsville in South Texas. The child became ill in Brownsville and was taken to a Houston hospital and died Monday night.
68 infections had been reported in the United States before the report of the toddler's death.

WFAA - TV reports Tarrant County Public Health officials said Wednesday that it has identified five more people -- ranging in age from 11 months to 75 years old -- who may be suffering from swine flu.

Four schools in Dallas County and one in Cleburne have already shut down as more swine flu cases are identified.

Cancelled classes are having an impact on some school districts even more so than it normally would, as students were to begin TAKS testing this week.

Still no cases of swine flu have been confirmed nor suspected in Hunt County, or any of its bordering counties in Northeast Texas.

On Tuesday evening, the City of Commerce and Hunt County were featured on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams regarding their response to the swine flu. You can view that video at the following link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032619/#30463497.
