Saint-Saen's Egyptian
Jean-Yves Thibaudet's Science Fiction Piano

by David Srebnik

The Piano Concerto No 5 by Saint-Saens is known as the "Egyptian" Concerto, because it includes a song melody Saint-Saens heard while vacationing in Egypt. Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet just recorded the "Egyptian" concerto and says that Middle Eastern subtitle also applies to the exotic sound effects heard in the concerto's second movement.

Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet's new recording features Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No. 5 "Egyptian" and the Piano Concerto No.2, plus the Symphonic Variations by Caesar Franck.
